President's Message to GCC HIMSS Members
March 27, 2006
Frank Scafidi
Dear Greater Chicago Chapter of HIMSS Members,
As we enter the final months of our program year I’d like to give you an update on your chapters’ activities.
In November, 2005 we held our first program on RHIOs — Theory, Progress & Practice, at the Elmhurst Memorial Center for Health in Elmhurst, IL. Our speakers were
• David E. Clark, Director, Integration & Interoperability, HIMSS
• Catherine Sprague, Senior Business Analyst, Technology Services, University HealthSystem Consortium
• Kevin Carr, MD, TRUST Program Director for the Waterbury, Health Access Program
The program was well attended with over 70 members present. At the end of all of our programs we ask that a program assessment be completed so we can see how we are serving you. This program received a score of 3.59 out of 4.00 satisfaction rating.
Our second program, held on January 19th, 2006 was titled The Hospital of the Future. It was presented at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in downtown Chicago. Our speakers were:
• Douglas Colburn, CIO, Nebraska Heart Institute Heart Hospital
• Ravi Nemana, Senior Advisor, Information Technology, The Health Technology Center
The evaluation score for this program was 3.75 out of 4.00 and one of the best attended with 123 seats filled.
Up next is a program titled “Nursing Informatics - Fostering Excellence in Care” to be held on Thursday, April 27, 2006 at the Holiday Inn Gurnee Convention Center. This program is a joint effort between GCCHIMSS and the Wisconsin Dairyland Chapters. Ruth MacCallum, RN is the Program Chair. Ruth has taken the initiative to organize a Nursing sub-group under our chapter and the all day program they have put together looks terrific.
Our last program will be held on May 11 and is titled “IT Governance: Is Everybody Happy?”. You will hear a presentation describing a classical Governance model and then hear from a panel of speakers who will discuss what works and what doesn’t. If you or your organization is struggling with IT Governance we think you’ll find this program useful.
Our final event for this year will be our Annual Chapter Meeting and Summer Social. At this combined business and a social event you will hear a summary of the past years activities, our financial status, any items requiring a membership vote will be brought forward, scholarship awardees announced and the newly elected Board members will be introduced.
As always I want to thank our board members who work so hard to manage the chapter and make our programs successful. They are Susan Wozniak – Past President, Dawn Mitchell – President Elect, Bob Milfajt – Treasurer, Rose Ann Laureto – Secretary, Beth Assif – Programs, Joel Splan – Communications, Lisa Nemec, Corey Gaarde and Lydia Lindholm – Members at Large, and Vince Vitali – Advocacy Liaison.
I also want to thank our fine sponsors for their financial support.
Best regards, peace and prosperity to all,
Frank Scafidi

RHIOs (Regional Health Information Organizations) - Theory, Progress & Practice
Our First Program of the Year
GCC Board
We were pleased to announce the first of our educational programs for the year, and we were even more pleased by the outstanding attendance. With standing room only, our speakers received excellent feedback on their shared expereinces and insights.
In conjunction with physician practice EMRs, the concept of Regional Health Information Organizations or RHIOs is being promoted by the federal government as a way to improve patient care and reduce cost. The goal of this program was to share where some organizations are with respect to this initiative.
Our program was comprised of three expert speakers. David Clark, HIMSS Director of Integration & Interoperability, gave us a solid understanding of the National HIMSS position on the promotion of community health information; Pat Becker, VP, Technology Development, University Healthsystem Consortium provided an update on where the academic medical centers are on this initiative; our last speaker, Kevin Carr, MD, Program Director, Waterbury Health Access Program, Assistant Professor, Yale School of Medicine introduced us to the work he and his team are doing to create a state wide RHIO in Connecticut.

The Hospital of the Future
Our Second Program of the Year
GCC Board
Our second educational program for this year titled “The Hospital of the Future” was held on January 19th at the Northwestern Memorial Hospital Conference Center in downtown Chicago. For this event we had record breaking attendance, with 123 members joining us.
Tim Zoph, VP of IS & CIO at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, gave an introduction to this topic by speaking to some of the innovations employed by his own organization.
Our first speaker was Ravi Nemana, Senior Advisor for Information Technology and Director of IT Research at the Health Technology Center, a nonprofit “think tank” that researches and forecasts trends in health technology. Mr. Nemana directs HealthTech’s efforts to determine the impact of emerging technologies on health care and care delivery using a 10-year time horizon. He has worked on projects such as the Future of Wireless, Remote Patient Management, the Future of Robotics, the Future of Networking, and the Future of Imaging, among others.
Our second speaker was Doug Colburn, CIO of Nebraska Heart Hospital which is a very successful, all digital and for profit hospital. Doug recently spoke at the First Illinois Chapter of HFMA about the design of their facility, their systems and the benefits of their decisions.

GCC HIMSS 2006 Sponsorship Program
Corey Gaarde
The Greater Chicago Chapter of HIMSS implemented a Sponsorship Program in 2006, which provides vendors the opportunity to pay one fee for the year and be listed as a sponsor on our Website and on the thank you board at every GCC-HIMSS program throughout the calendar year. Gold and Platinum levels also provide the benefit of complimentary memberships and admissions to programs. We also welcome sponsorships for specific programs if vendors are not interested in the yearly sponsorship.
There are a lot of benefits to the GCC HIMSS chapter in implementing a sponsorship program, including:
• To get funding to secure more national level speakers, who can add additional value to members on key hot topics
• To offer more programs to members at a lower cost
• To help fund additional programs through Web Conferencing, which allows more members in Illinois to participate
• To give members exposure to the latest technologies and services so that members stay abreast of advancements in the industry
For more information on the GCC HIMSS Sponsorship Program, please contact Corey Gaarde, GCC HIMSS Board Member at Large, at 312-926-8007 or cgaarde@nmh.org
HIMSS Chapters Prepare For 2006 Advocacy Day
On Friday, March 17, more than 150 HIMSS members from all 42 HIMSS chapters participated in the first training session for HIMSS 2006 Advocacy Day events in Washington, D.C. The call offered participants the opportunity to become more informed and build momentum for the 5th HIMSS Annual Advocacy Day, scheduled for June 5 - 6 at the Ronald Reagan Building in Washington, D.C. Led by Dan Blum, chair of the HIMSS Chapter Advocacy Liaison Roundtable, the call included special remarks from Andrea J. Palm, legislative assistant to Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY), who encouraged all HIMSS members to advocate for changes to transform healthcare. Christopher Kush, author of The One-Hour Activist and president of Soapbox Consulting, gave members reasons to participate in Advocacy Day, which is free to all attendees. Members are urged to register for Advocacy Day and participate in the upcoming Advocacy Day webinar on April 21, when former U.S. Rep. Jack W. Buechner (R-MI) will conduct a one-hour presentation on “The Five Constituents I Remember.” Contact Blair Hedgepeth for more information.
Federal Health IT Legislation
2006 Federal Health IT Legislation Update
For the 109th Congress, HIMSS is now tracking 41 separate pieces of federal health IT (HIT) legislation in the HIMSS Legislative Action Center. To date, only one piece of HIT legislation (S. 544) has been passed and signed into law by the President during the 109th Congress. The HIMSS Federal HIT Legislative Tracker compares and contrasts 11 separate pieces of Senate legislation and 7 pieces of House legislation. The HIMSS Board has taken a position to support 11 pieces of HIT legislation during the 109th Congress. It also appears that there are two leading pieces of legislation that might be passed this year before Congress adjourns for upcoming elections. They are:
S. 1418 (The Wired for Health Care Quality Act), which has been passed by the Senate
H.R. 4157 (Health Information Technology Promotion Act), which has been introduced into the House of Representatives.
For more information on federal HIT legislation, contact the HIMSS Office of Public Policy & Advocacy in Washington, D.C.
